Anders weathered a rough childhood and young adult life which not only encouraged an escapist penchant for making up characters but also an insider's sympathy for the strong but put-upon women who people her films. Growing up in rural Kentucky, Anders would always remember hanging onto her father's leg at age five as he abandoned her family. Traveling frequently with her mother and sisters, Anders would later be raped at age 12, endure abuse from a stepfather who once threatened her with a gun, and suffer a mental breakdown at age 15. Venturing back to Kentucky from Los Angeles at 17, she would soon move to London to live with the man who would father her first child. Upon her return to the US, Anders finally began to pick up the pieces of her life. She enrolled in junior college and later the UCLA film school and managed when a second daughter came along. Enchanted with _Wim Wenders_' films, she so deluged the filmmaker with correspondence that he gave her a job as a production assistant on his film Paris, Texas (1984). After graduating from UCLA, Anders made her feature writing and directing debut, Border Radio (1987), a study of the LA punk scene, in collaboration with two former classmates. Her first solo effort, Gas Food Lodging (1992), telling of a single mother and her two teenage daughters, and her followup, My Crazy Life (1993), looking at girl gangs in the Echo Park neighborhood of LA where Anders settled, have shown her to be a deeply personal filmmaker who has used her own experience to make grittily realistic, well-observed, gently ambling studies of women coming of age amid tough, sterile social conditions.- Actress

Wynonna Judd was raised in various places across the country, beginning in her birth state of Kentucky. As her mother Naomi Judd continued pursuing her nursing career, the Judd family settled twice in California and later full-time in Kentucky. In 1979, Wynonna, Naomi and younger half-sister Ashley Judd settled in Franklin, Tennessee and began searching for a record deal in nearby Nashville. In 1983, an unprecedented sit-down audition with RCA Nashville was successful, and indicated great things to come for country's newest duo The Judds. Several years and awards later, Naomi announced that she had contracted Hepatitis C during her nursing career from a needle stick. Their final concert on December 4, 1991 indicated an end to country music's most influential duo, and a beginning for someone who would break new records within the industry. Wynonna's first solo album, 'Wynonna', sold over 5 million copies, a first in the industry. Today, Wynonna continues her successful recording career along with raising children Elijah Judd and Grace Pauline from her first marriage to Nashville's Arch Kelley.- Additional Crew

Besides being a zany comedian, Don Barclay ( born Donn Van Tassel Barclay) was an innovative caricaturist whose humorous depictions of celebrities can be found in countless art galleries, museums, bars and restaurants across the United States. His most famous drawing (entitled 'SkiNose', displayed at the Library of Congress) has a cherubic-faced, red jump-suited skier jumping off Bob Hope's nose. During World War II, Don toured North Africa, the Middle East, China and the Pacific as part of a USO one-man show, drawing caricatures of more than 10,000 servicemen as well as of high ranking military brass.
Don began his career as a cartoonist for the San Francisco Examiner then segued into comedy and burlesque. He was featured in the Ziegfeld Follies and Greenwich Village Follies of 1924, having previously worked on screen in silent comedies. He was a Keystone Kop sometime around 1914 to 1915. In 1918, he appeared in a series of one-reelers for Essanay which are now believed to be lost. His output in the 20s was sporadic at best, but in the 30s he was occasionally featured in short comedies for Hal Roach, including Air Fright (1933) (with Thelma Todd) and Mixed Nuts (1934). His remaining filmography consisted primarily of bit parts. From the early 50s, he was a voice actor for Walt Disney who apparently regarded him as something of a 'good luck charm'. His last featured appearance was as Mr. Binnacle in Mary Poppins (1964). Don retired to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he became a regular visitor to the local hangout, the Pink Pony, drawing caricatures of the regular patrons. He died in Palm Springs in October 1975, aged 82.- Production Designer

Jillian Hall was born on 6 September 1980 in Ashland, Kentucky, USA. She is an actress, known for WWE Raw (1993), WWE Smackdown! (1999) and WWE Superstars (2009).- The inspiration for the movie Days of Thunder (1990), Tim Richmond earned the nickname Hollywood Tim because of his passion to become an actor, a bug that bit him during a cameo appearance in the movie Stroker Ace (1983) with Burt Reynolds.
But Richmond became most famous for his explosive rise and tragic fall in NASCAR racing. The 1980 Indianapolis 500 rookie of the year, Richmond was involved in an Indycar crash where his car was sliced in two at Michigan International Speedway, and was persuaded by Pocono Raceway's Joseph Mattioli to try stock cars.
Richmond drove the 1981 season for some five different teams and finally achieved stability in 1982, winning his first two races. But his greatest success came when billionaire Charlotte car dealer Rick Hendrick slotted him into one of his racecars with crew chief 'Harry Hyde(II)'.
After a stormy opening quarter of 1986, Hyde and Richmond reached an understanding of each other's abilities and from late May onward were all but unstoppable, winning seven races, most of them in a ten-race span from mid-June to early September; only late-season engine failures cost Richmond a shot at the season title. His most spectacular win came at Pocono in July 1986; after crashing with 'Richard Petty' Richmond made up a lap and beat Geoff Bodine and Ricky Rudd in a three-wide photo finish.
But Richmond's health was deteriorating - he suffered a near-fatal bout with double pneumonia after the 1986 season and was literally begging doctors to save his life. Unknown to the sport at the time, Richmond also contracted AIDS (his doctor later said that Richmond, universally known in the sport as a playboy, contracted the disease via heterosexual intercourse, but there is still doubt in that regard), and despite his illness, he returned to NASCAR circles for an eight-race run in 1987 that saw victories at Pocono and Riverside, California.
Unaware of his illness other drivers suspected Richmond was a drug user, and persuaded NASCAR to test him. Two tests resulted during Speedweeks 1988, with contradictory results. NASCAR asked to see his medical records; Richmond refused and filed a defamation suit against NASCAR that was settled out of court when it was ruled that his medical records were relevant to the case.
Richmond was badly injured in a motorcycle accident in 1989 and finally succumbed to AIDS that August. - Actor

May 27, 1923 - Born Henry Ellis Stewart in Ashland City, Tennessee; the son of musical parents and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. Redd's family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, while he was still young. He learned to play the banjo, piano, fiddle and guitar as a child, then dropped out of junior high to perform in local bands. He legally changed his first name to Redd because of his red hair, freckles and fair complexion. 1935 - Redd was contracted to write a song for a car dealer's commercial in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of 14 (he completed only the seventh grade.) He then formed and played in various bands around Louisville, including the Prairie Riders. 1937 - Pee Wee King came to Louisville to play on WHAS and signed Redd as a musician with the Golden West Cowboys. At the time, Eddy Arnold was the band's vocalist. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Redd was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to the South Pacific. While stationed there with the rank of sergeant, Redd wrote "A Soldier's Last Letter," which Ernest Tubb worked on and recorded in 1944, making it a No. 1 hit staying at the top for four weeks out of a seven month stay on the Country charts and crossing over to the Pop chart Top 20. When Redd returned to Pee Wee's Golden West Cowboys at the end of WW II, he became the band's vocalist, Arnold having gone solo. Now Redd started to take songwriting seriously. 1946 - married Frances Jean Grimes at the age of 23. 1947 - appeared on the Grand Ole Opry until 1947 and a year earlier, he and Pee Wee wrote their first major success, "Bonaparte's Retreat," which was Kay Starr's launch-pad to stardom. 1947 - Signed a lifetime exclusive songwriting contract with Acuff-Rose Publications. 1947 - It's a Girl! Redd & Jean's first child was born - Lydia Nixon Stewart (named after Pee Wee King's wife- Lydia.) 1948 - "Tennessee Waltz", his most popular song, was written with Pee Wee King. (King & Stewart decided to write the song after hearing Bill Monroe's Kentucky Waltz on the radio. Stewart emptied a matchbox and tore it open to write down the song.) 1953 - It's a Boy! Redd & Jean's second child was born - Colonel Henry Redd Stewart, Jr. 1954 - It's another Boy! Redd & Jean's third child was born - William (Billy) Rae Stewart 1947-1957 - In 1947, Pee Wee, Redd and the band moved to WAVE Louisville, Kentucky, where they had a weekly radio show and then later in the year, they transferred to WAVE-TV, where they had a television show until 1957. Redd sang on Pee Wee King's 1948 version, which reached the Top 3 on the Country chart and crossed over to the Top 30 on the Pop charts, on RCA Victor. It was re-issued in 1951 and climbed to the Top 10. Other hit versions, in 1948, were by Cowboy Copas (Top 3) and Roy Acuff (Top 15). The following year, Tennessee featured in the title of two other King hits on which Redd appeared, namely, "Tennessee Tears" and "Tennessee Polka." Pee Wee King's version of "Bonaparte's Retreat" edged into the Top 10, during 1950. However, it was in 1951 that Pee Wee had a No.1 hit with the King-Stewart song "Slow Poke," which also became a No.1 Pop success. That year, Patti Page took "The Tennessee Waltz" to No.1 on the Pop chart, which also became a Top 3 Country hit. It went on to sell over 6 million copies. The following year, the song became a Top 10 hit for Hawkshaw Hawkins and "You Belong to Me" became a Pop hit for Jo Stafford. By now, Pee Wee had dropped his band's name and as Pee Wee King & his Band, he racked up "Silver and Gold" (Country Top 5/Pop Top 20) and "Busybody" (Country Top 10/Pop Top 30). Redd was still the featured vocalist on the 1954 Pee Wee King double-sided hit "Changing Partners/Bimbo." Their final hit together was "Backward, Turn Backward." Redd toured with Pee Wee throughout the 50's and 60's, and during that time, their songs continued to be recorded. In 1959, Billy Grammar had a Pop success with "Bonaparte's Retreat" as did Bobby Comstock and Jerry Fuller with "Tennessee Waltz." Other charted versions of Redd's songs were "Bonaparte's Retreat" by Carl Smith (1970) and Glen Campbell (1974) and "Tennessee Waltz" by Sam Cooke (1964) and Lacy J. Dalton (1980). On February 17, 1965, "Tennessee Waltz" was officially proclaimed by Governor Frank Clement as the Tennessee state song. As well as recording with Pee Wee, Redd also recorded on his own, including the 1959 Audio Lab album "Redd Stewart Sings Favorite Old Time Tunes." He also appeared in several movies with Pee Wee King, including "Gold Mine in the Sky (1938), "Ridin' the Outlaw Trail" (1951) and "The Rough, Tough West" (1952), the last two starred Charles Starrett as the Durango Kid.
